Ceylon Tobacco Company - Our Commitment to Water Stewardship

Our Commitment to Water Stewardship

At Ceylon Tobacco Company, we understand that effective water management plays an integral role towards human and community development as well as in ensuring a sustainable business. Accordingly, we strive to drive water management efficiencies across our operations and value chain while facilitating access to clean water across communities that lack this vital resource.

In 2021, we commenced our journey toward Water Stewardship. Our commitments include good water governance, sustainable water balance, good water quality status, healthy status of Important Water-Related Areas, and Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH). To reinforce our efforts, we ambitiously embarked on the Alliance for Water Stewardship (AWS) certification.

AWS is a global membership collaboration for businesses, NGOs, and the public sector, where members contribute to the sustainability of local water resources by adopting and promoting a universal framework for the sustainable use of water – the International Water Stewardship Standard, or AWS Standard. We identified catchment areas in Polgolla (an area adjacent to CTC’s Green Leaf Threshing Plant facility in Kandy) and challenged water bodies, associated risks and opportunities in consultation with the relevant stakeholders, and accordingly formulated a strategy and an action plan for implementation.

Our first phase will focus on implementing the AWS Standard for our GLTP facility and the Polgolla catchment area in alignment with all local relevant stakeholders. We continue to engage with the local community through stakeholder alignment meetings, initiatives to support the AWS agenda, and by creating general awareness as part of our extended efforts. We are geared to implement the AWS Standard for our Colombo facility as Phase 2 and will continue to develop our business in a manner that facilitates effective water stewardship across our manufacturing locations and our communities.
